The West Wing

For several years my favorite tv show was The West Wing. I managed to find the original version because I didn’t want to watch it doubled to Spanish.

As a journalist, I found the narrative very interesting, and I can say that I learned a lot about American politics. The episodes had everything I could ask for: some humor, drama, intellectual challenges, and good actors playing solid characters.

I remember especially a Christmas episode in season 2 when Josh was recovering from a severe gunshot he suffered during a confused attempt in which the president was wounded. Months later, he was lost emotionally, but in denying of his situation, and Leo made him see a psychiatrist. I watched the episode when I was suffering from deep depression, and I empathized with him during his conversation with the psychiatrist, which was very well done. I have been there. I was there at that very moment.

At the end of the episode, Josh has an interesting short conversation with Leo about friendship in dire times. This is what I needed in that moment of my life, go and find a real friend to help me get out of the bottomless pit in which I was trapped. And I did it. And it worked.

  1. Westwing has to be my favorite show of all time. I absolutely adore the show where they walk Josh through and the trauma he suffered. It was an extremely powerful show. I’ve been there also. I empathize with you.

    1. Thank you, Cee. I was astonished by how well they conveyed all that goes through a troubled mind in times like those. Besides, they used one of my favorite resources: music. Yo-Yo Ma was superb.

  2. That was a great show. Too bad that if they tried to do a 2020 update of that show with the current occupant of the West Wing, it would be more like a Shakespearean tragedy.

    1. Indeed. I can’t even imagine what would be like the show these days. But maybe, doing it with a fictional president doing rational things like people would like to have it in the White House instead of the current president would be a sort of way of consolation
